Authorities of Kapelebyong district have supported it's local farmers with quality oil crop seeds to boost their efforts in agricultural production.
The initiative supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries is aimed at boosting oilseed production, thereby enhancing food security and creating sustainable livelihoods for the youth and local population.
Ten host farmers and two local seed businesses are the beneficiaries of this initiative. Each pilot farmer, drawn from the sub-counties of Acowa, Acinga, Kapelebyong, Okungur, and Alito, has been provided with three kilograms of sesame-2 seeds and 25 kilograms of Macksoy 3 N soybeans on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
This targeted support—totaling 42 kilograms of sesame-2 and 275 kilograms of soya beans for the district—represents a significant step in improving the quality and yield of oilseed crops.
Importantly, local seed businesses are also included in this initiative. Odiding Oil Seeds Producers have received 12 kilograms of sesame seeds and 50 kilograms of Macksoy soybeans, while the Angerepo Groundnut Cooperative Society has been allocated the same amount of Macksoy and is slated to receive an additional 50 kilograms of groundnuts.
Peter Eceru, the Agriculture Extension Officer for Kapelebyong, emphasizes the role of beneficiary farmers as demonstration models within the community.
"These selected beneficiaries are expected to share their knowledge and experiences with fellow farmers," Eceru explains.
The initiative comes at a time when Kapelebyong district authorities have also endorsed several key agricultural enterprises under the Parish Development Model (PDM).
Among the priority enterprises are piggery, goat rearing, and the cultivation of oilseeds such as sesame, sunflower, soybeans, and groundnuts.
By prioritizing oilseed crops, the district is addressing the dual challenges of food security and economic development. Oilseeds are not only a staple food source but also hold commercial value in local and regional markets.
