Kapelebyong to vaccinate 43,500 cattle against FMD
The production department of Kapelebyong district has unleashed a two-months-roadmap to vaccinate 43,500 cattle against Foot and Mouth disease (FMD).
These followed receipt of 43,500 doses of FMD vaccine from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.
The joint vaccination exercise is expected to run from 11th December 2024 to 14th February 2025. It will be launched in Alito Sub County on 11st up to 13th December 2024.
In the program, Okungur Sub-County will be handed from 18th to 20th December, 2024, Obalanga Sub-County and Town Council (8th – 10th January 2025), Kapelebyong Town Council (15th-17th January 2025) and Kapelebyong Sub County (22nd-24th January 2025).
Additionally, the team will handle Akoromit Sub County from 29th to 31st January 2025, Acowa Sub-County and Town Council (5th – 7th February 2025) and Acinga Sub County (12th-14th February 2025)
A letter from the Chief Administrative Office dated 2nd December 2024, called on senior assistant secretaries and Town Clerks to ask parish chiefs and town agents to unconditionally mobilise their respective communities to construct temporal crushes for ease of the veterinary team to execute the exercise.
Emmanuel Ekolu, the Ag. District Veterinary Officer, highlighted that vaccination exercise will be conducted from one parish to another due to the understaffing in the district.
He called for maximum cooperation from farmers for the vaccination exercise to succeed.
Ekolu warned farmers against intake of milk and meat of vaccinated cows within three and seven days after vaccination, respectively.
Ekita encouraged farmers to take their animals to the usual vaccination points to ease work of the veterinary staff in meeting the program deadline.
According to the recent livestock census report, Kapelebyong district has 106,000 cattle, with at least 21,659 sold in 2023/2024 Financial Year.
