Kapelebyong receives, allocates food relief to affected households

The District Disaster Management Committee of Kapelebyong has distributed food relief to the households that were affected by the floods and water logging in the mid of last year.
The district received 20,000 kgs of maize flour and 10,000 kgs of beans from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) on 10th January 2025 and distributed it to respective lower local government authorities on 17th January 2024.
According to the guidelines from the OPM, the food relief is not meant for the general public but for only the households which had been affected by the disaster.
“Special considerations should be put on widows, the elderly, the sick, persons with disabilities and child headed families, among others, in the distribution of relief,” the letter from OPM read.
The six Lower Local Governments considered by OPM to benefit from this relief include Acowa SC, Okungur SC, Kapelebyong SC, Acinga SC, Alito SC and Obalanga SC. The consignment came with maize flour and beans packed in bags of 50kgs.
During the DDMC sitting on 16th January 2025, Acowa SC was allocated 177 bags of maize flour & 88 bags of beans, Acinga SC was allocated 9 bags of maize flour & four bags of beans and Alito SC received an allocation of 27 bags of maize flour and 13 bags of beans.
Additionally, Kapelebyong SC received 27 bags of maize flour & 14 bags of beans, Okungur SC was allocated 97 bags of maize flour & 49 bags of beans and Obalanga SC was allocated 63 bags of maize flour and 32 bags of beans.
While officiating the distribution of relief at Kapelebyong TC hall, Mr. Ojirot Emmy, urged the lower local government authorities to exhibit transparency in the distribution process.
“Please make sure that this food reaches the intended beneficiaries. Avoid temptations which can endanger your reputation,” Mr. Ojirot said.
Peter Alobai, who was representing the Chairperson DDMC urged responsible officers to desist from storing the food relief for long but ensure they exercise equity and accountability.
The district disaster report sent to the OPM indicated that over 3000 households of Acowa SC, Acinga (163) and Alito SC (514) were affected by the water logging.
In the same document, Kapelebyong recorded 521 household affected as Okungur SC compiled 1866 and Obalanga SC recorded 1215 households affected.
