Kapelebyong: District commissions construction of shs126million Water projects

Authorities in Kapelebyong district have commenced the drilling and construction of critical water sources valued at Shs126 million for the financial year 2024/2025.
These investments include three deep boreholes in Atarukot, Abota, and Aturai villages, in addition to two production wells located at the Amoni Rural Growth Centre and Alito Seed Secondary School.
The handover of the construction sites to Mama Borewells contractor took place on April 3, 2025, amidst loud celebrations from local community members.
The completion of these water sources is anticipated by May, with an official commissioning set for June 2025. Each deep borehole carries a value of Shs22 million, while the production wells are each expected to cost Shs30 million, underscoring the government's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens through improved infrastructure.
Mr. Olinga Tom Otukol, the Resident district commissioner, highlighted the government's dedication to fulfilling its mandate as outlined in the 2021 National Resistance Movement (NRM) manifesto.
"The NRM government signed a social contract with the citizens of Uganda, and this borehole drilling is part of its implementation. We promise to deliver," Mr. Otukol stated during the site handover.
His remarks reflect a broader commitment to promoting socio-economic development through infrastructural enhancements.
Emphasizing the importance of hygiene and sanitation, Mr. Opio Francis, the Assistant Water Officer in charge f hygiene and sanitation, urged beneficiary communities to respect the established hygiene and sanitation committees set to monitor the use and maintenance of the new water sources.
"Community participation is crucial for the sustainability of these projects. We need the locals to actively engage in maintaining these facilities for the benefit of all," he asserted.
Kapelebyong district currently boasts a water coverage of 78%. The district's recent 18th ranking in the national assessment, achieving a score of 83.6%, reflects its ongoing commitment to improving water infrastructure.
The anticipated increase in funding for the water sector is expected to facilitate the construction of additional water sources, further enhancing community health outcomes and quality of life.
